Abstract of Ph. D. Thesis:
DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL DRYING SYSTEMS
Drying is one of the most important and omnipresent unit operations in most industrial sectors like chemical, pharmaceutical, food, agriculture, bioengineering, biotechnology and so on. Considering these applications in mind, various types of dryers such as vacuum tray dryer, fluidized bed dryer, freeze dryer, spray dryer, heat pump assisted dryers, rotory drum dryer and so on are available in the market. Energy consumption is one of the main concerns in drying operation as it competes with the distillation as the most energy –intensive unit operation due to the high latent heat of vaporization of water and inherent efficiency of using hot air as the (most common) drying media. Energy consumption in drying operation ranges from a low value of under five percent for the chemical process industries to thirty percent for the paper making industries. For drying of pharmaceutical products quality considerations override other considerations since the cost of drying is unimportant. Drying of food and biological products require adherence to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and hygienic equipment design and operation. In some cases minimizing energy consumption or reduction of drying time is of more importance.
After selecting the proper drying system for a given product (as several drying systems may be equally suited for a given application), the stepwise design of the selected dryer is very important. In proposed work focus will be given on
-
Selection of proper drying systems for the different range of products such as food materials, pharmaceuticals, bulk chemicals and so on.
-
Experimentation and development of stepwise design procedure for selected drying systems such as fluid bed dryer, Heat pump assisted dryers, agitated fluid bed dryer and microwave dryer.
-
Some computational fluid dynamic analysis of the dryers like fluid bed dryer which will help in proper design of the dryer.
-
Design of air distribution system for fluid bed drye
